In the past few months, Apple has increased the prices for iPhones and iPads, some of them sharply. The MacBook Air with M2 processor is also significantly more expensive than the previous model. A surprise will follow at the beginning of 2023. Not only because Apple is now also equipping the Mac mini with the M2 and even with the M2 Pro processor, but also because the starting price of 699 euros is lower than that of the M1 model presented in 2020. That cost 778.85 euros at the market launch (because of the reduced VAT during the corona pandemic).
Apple Mac mini with turbo chip
For the little money there is initially little that is new optically. As usual, the technology is housed in a compact housing made from recycled aluminium. What is happening inside is more important anyway. The cheapest version has the M2 processor known from the MacBook Air and the iPad Pro, each with four cores for everyday and particularly difficult tasks. The graphic calculates a GPU with ten cores. There is also 8 gigabytes of RAM and an SSD with a little less than 256 gigabytes.
At the other end of the performance spectrum is the brand new M2 Pro, which is also used in the new MacBook Pros. Starting price: not quite as cheap 1,549 euros. Apple equips the chip with six performance cores for the strenuous tasks. The number of efficiency cores for day-to-day business, on the other hand, is identical to that of the normal M2. The graphics unit of the M2 Pro can also use 16 cores. For a surcharge, you can also get the chip with a total of twelve CPU and 19 GPU cores. That is the maximum for the small computer.
When it comes to storage, you have choices. 16 gigabytes of RAM and an SSD with 512 gigabytes are always included. If the wallet allows it, this becomes a maximum of 32 gigabytes of RAM and 8 terabytes of SSD storage (with intermediate levels of 1, 2 and 4 terabytes). With the M2, Apple can optionally screw 16 or 24 gigabytes of RAM and an SSD with up to 2 terabytes into the case.
Mac mini finally with more ports
The choice of processor not only affects performance, but also the available connections. The M2 model comes with two Thunderbolt 4 jacks. Accordingly, it only works with two external monitors. The Mac mini with M2 Pro has four of these ports. However, the work is limited to three screens. After all: One of the connected displays can even be an 8K model.
The other connections are identical. One HDMI, one Gigabit Ethernet and two USB-A ports are on board. Go online with the minis via WiFi 6E. Keyboard, mouse and headphones connect via Bluetooth 5.3. There is also a jack for wired headsets that also supports high-impedance headphones.
Prices and Availability
The entry-level model of the Mac mini with M2 processor starts at 699 euros. The computer with the M2 Pro will cost you at least 1,549 euros. Incidentally, the fully equipped Pro model costs a whopping 5,229 euros. All models can be pre-ordered now. Deliveries will start on January 24, 2023.
