test conclusion

The Epson Ecotank ET-2721 is only worthwhile for frequent printers, because only then do the extremely low printing costs become noticeable. The quality of the device depends on the paper: great on special paper, a bit patchy on normal paper – good for text, moderate for graphics.

This happens all too often to buyers of inexpensive multifunction devices: after a short time, the ink cartridges are empty and replacements are only available at hefty prices. That doesn’t happen with the Epson Ecotank ET-2721: the ink tanks are huge, refilling them costs little. To do this, customers have to dig deeper into their pockets when making a purchase. Is it really worth it? COMPUTER BILD tested the Epson Ecotank ET-2721.

Epson Ecotank ET-2721 in the test: High price

Many people are likely to rub their eyes at the price of the Ecotank: the ET-2721 cost almost 400 euros at the time of the test – and that without any special features or speed. Incidentally, it is identical in construction to the Epson Ecotank ET-2720, only the distribution channels differ marginally. Comparably equipped competitor models with a similar speed are available for less than half. But they often get back the difference to the higher purchase price later through the ink costs.
Epson Ecotank ET-2721: review

If the ink of the Epson Ecotank ET-2721 is empty, you do not exchange cartridges – you simply fill the existing tanks with new ink.

The Ecotank has no exchangeable cartridges, but four permanently installed tanks, each of which holds 65 milliliters of ink – five to ten times that of conventional ink cartridges. This ensures great endurance and lowers costs: With one set of ink, for example, over 1,600 photos in the standard format 10×15 centimeters can be printed out for just under 2 cents per image or 3,600 pages of text for 0.28 cents per page. The only thing that is expensive is the paper.

The cost of the refill bottles is just under 10 euros. A milliliter of ink costs around 6 cents – liquid in ink cartridges is quickly ten times as expensive. The cost advantage is best seen in a direct comparison with a multifunction device with classic ink cartridges – for example with the Epson WorkForce Pro WF-4720DWF. Color graphic and photo prints in particular were ten times more expensive with the device than with the ink tank printer Epson Ecotank ET-2721 (see table above).

Ecotank ET-2721: Good for texts, great for photos

The Ecotank ET-2721 was not entirely convincing in terms of print quality: it writes texts legibly on paper, but takes a little time (for its price range). He needed six seconds for a single page and 40 seconds for six pages. It also prints photos rather leisurely, but very attractively with deep black and very high contrast. But the Epson needs good photo paper for this. On plain paper, as in the graphic print test, the Epson does not fully show its quality – the printouts are low in contrast and less detailed.

Epson saved on the equipment. For example, the Ecotank does not have a second USB port and therefore does not print directly from a camera or a USB stick. The built-in scanner only reads single pages. The automatic document feeder, which is common in this price range, is missing. On top of that, the scan quality is rather mediocre. Copying works quickly: The Epson only needs twelve seconds for one page.
