For the first time, Brevard County will have a medical school.Under an affiliate agreement between Florida Tech and Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine in New Mexico, a new four-year medical school will open in Melbourne.“The need that Florida has for more physicians here is growing as the population is growing. The fact that we will now have a medical school in this part of the state helps alleviate that pressure,” said Florida Tech’s Interim President Robert King.The two schools have been working together over the last few years, now stepping up that relationship.The first class of 100 students will start in July 2024.“For students that graduate from a medical school in the state of Florida, they graduate but then they do their residency in the state of Florida and almost 80% will stay in Florida. That’s one of the highest in the country,” said John Hummer, the president of Burrell College of Osteopathic Design.The medical school will occupy two floors in an existing building on the Florida Tech campus. The new school grows the curriculum for Florida Tech, but administrators say it’s also going to create a talent base that’s direly needed in the community.“Our hope is that many of our hospitals, nursing homes, other health care providers in the community will create residency programs,” King said.That’ll not only help with the need for more doctors as Florida is expected to have a shortfall of 18,000 physicians by 2035.“It will really upgrade the quality of health care across the county,” King said.
