How Miami compares in the state of Florida for the top 25 prospects

Under the leadership of Mario Cristobal, the Miami Hurricanes football program wants to recruit nationally in search of elite talents.

That quest, however, starts at home with keeping some of the best prospects from the state of Florida home.

Mission accomplished for Miami in 2023 in that regard.

UM signed four of the top 25 prospects from the state of Florida, according to the industry generated 247Sports Composite. Miami owns a commitment from the top prospect in the state, cornerback Cormani McClain, who has elected to not sign during the early signing period.

How does Miami’s number compare to the other programs that plucked the top 25 prospects from Florida in the 2023 cycle? The numbers are encouraging.

Georgia – Eight

Miami – Four (and one unsigned commitment)

Alabama – Three

Florida – Two

Ohio State – Two

FSU – One

Texas – One

UCF – One

Oklahoma – One

LSU – One

The haul that Georgia put together in the state of Florida for the 2023 cycle is ridiculous. The Bulldogs raided the state, picking up 5-star DE Damon Wilson, 4-star DE Samuel M’Pemba, 4-star LB Raylen Wilson, 4-star LB Troy Bowles, 4-star DL Jordan Hall, 4-star WR Tyler Williams, 4-star DE Gabriel Harris, and 4-star TE Pearce Spurlin.

Here is a look at how many top 25 players from the state of Florida the Hurricanes have signed over the previous five cycles:

2022: Four (Average ranking = 18)

2021: Four (Average ranking = 13.25)

2020: Five (Average ranking = 15.2)

2019: Two (Average ranking = 17)

2018: Five (Average ranking = 15.2)

The average fop 25 player in the state of Florida that Miami signed in the 2023 class is also a higher caliber than UM has signed in recent years.

Miami’s average of top 25 player signed in this 2023 class checks in at 13.75. If McClain eventually signs with UM, that average dips to 11.2, which would be Miami’s best top 25 state of Florida haul in a while.

If McClain signs with Miami, it would also mark the first time the Hurricanes have signed the top two players in the state, joining signee Francis Mauigoa.

The Hurricanes aren’t going to keep every elite prospect home, but UM needs to keep its fair share home. The 2023 cycle was a strong start in this regard.
