RTX 4090: Connection cable causes problems
In one day, two RTX 4090 buyers complained about burning issues on Reddit. They posted photos of the 12VHPWR connector, which is visibly charred in both cases. One player is said to have even developed smoke in the housing. That happened when the buyers of the 2,000-euro graphics cards were calmly gambling.
Crypto mining is out of the question with current energy prices anyway. However, many rumors are buzzing around the web that put the damage to those affected into perspective. Example: A user should not be the first owner. This could mean that the cables have been damaged through carelessness.
Many models affected
Rumor has it that the power connection has caused a lot of problems in the past. The part has already been used in the RTX 3090 Ti models and is said to have caused problems under certain conditions. In concrete terms: Heavily bent plugs tended to overheat even then. However, many gamers do not pay attention to their cabling, whether due to lack of space or lack of interest. Nevertheless, Nvidia uses this source of fire with the RTX 4090 cards – across brands. That means: All manufacturers have this connection – not just the in-house Nvidia versions.
Who is guilty?
Gamers Nexus YouTube channel has released a video about safety testing of the 12VHPWR connector. Wording of the hardware experts: The connection fulfills the target, but if it is bent, there are massive voltage differences on different pins. Nvidia reacts contradictory. On the one hand, the company promised in an official statement to investigate the cases closely, on the other hand, a marketing manager from Nvidia allegedly reacted rather salty to the complaint from the YouTuber “JayzTwoCents” – the YouTuber is “worried about problems that don’t exist”. Is Nvidia’s problem bigger than previously thought? Time will tell.
