Complete list: The best graphics cards

RTX 4080 in the test: 12 or 16 gigabytes?

Gamers can choose between two versions when buying the RTX 4080: one with 12 gigabytes of memory and one with 16 gigabytes. Caution: The two variants differ fundamentally from each other. The 12 gigabyte version works with a higher clock, but has 2,048 less CUDA computing units for task distribution (see comparison below).

The tested RTX 4080 with 16 gigabytes can distribute calculations to 9,728 units. Compared to its sister model, it has 16 more units for calculating ray tracing effects such as reflections and fine shadows, and 64 more cores for calculating the surfaces of characters, objects and environments in games. The memory is not only 4 gigabytes larger, it also has 64 more lines to the graphics chip for data exchange.

RTX 4080 review

Testing the Zotac Geforce RTX 4080 Trinity: With a weight of a good 1.8 kilograms, the RTX 4080 is also a heavy graphics card.

Compared to the older Geforce RTX 3080, the differences are manageable at first glance. But that is deceptive, because the 4080 is a completely new development: The structures of the almost 46 billion circuits (transistors) and conductor tracks are now only four instead of eight nanometers as in the 3080. The ray tracing cores are new, as are the tensor cores, which are used for the Deep LearningSgreat Samplification (DLSS) are responsible. This technique can self-generate entire frames in custom games like A Plague Tale: Requiem. To do this, the RTX 4080 analyzes the content of the existing frames, including movements, particles, reflections and light. An AI creates the extra image from this data.
RTX 4080 review

The RTX 4080 works much faster than its predecessors RTX 3080 and RTX 3090.

RTX 4080 in the Tempo test: Plenty of steam

And what’s the point? That’s right, a lot of work! Compared to the predecessor Geforce RTX 3080, the speed increased by 41 percent, the distance to AMD’s Radeon 6900 XT is 30 percent. Amazing: The RTX 4080 sometimes worked much more quickly than Nvidia’s former top graphics chip, the Geforce RTX 3090 – see the comparison above.
RTX 4080 review

The tested Zotac Geforce RTX 4080 Trinity is around 36 centimeters long, 15 centimeters high and 7.2 centimeters thick. Depending on the mainboard, it occupies up to four PCI Express slots.

Also good: Despite the significantly higher performance, the power consumption was reduced: while the RTX 3080 still needed 343 watts under full load, the RTX 4080 only needed 307 watts. The difference compared to the RTX 3090 is even more glaring: it consumed almost 50 percent more under full load – with less performance.

  • Very high game speed – even in 4K with ray tracing effects
  • Very fast rendering speed
  • Very high price
  • Slightly high power consumption (307 watts)

Nvidia’s second high-end graphics chip also made it onto the podium – ahead of AMD’s RX 6900 XT. The Zotac RTX 4080 is currently the second fastest graphics card in the COMPUTER BILD leaderboard. But the power has its price: Zotac is asking 1,500 euros for the tested Geforce RTX 4080 Trinity at the start of sales on November 15, 2022!
