Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 in the test: The alpha animal among gaming monitors

The predecessor model Samsung Odyssey G9 (without Neo) was already impressive in the test and got the grade 1.6 (“good”) – this made the 49-inch giant the best of the gaming monitors tested by COMPUTER BILD. But instead of resting on its laurels, the Koreans further improved the already good screen. The test reveals what the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 does better than its predecessor without “Neo”.

Complete List: The Best Gaming Monitors

Enormous proportions

The size, the spaceship-like design and the shape have remained the same – that’s a good thing. Only the technology has improved, but more on that later. The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is a gigantic 49-inch monitor (diagonal: 1.24 meters!) that shows games, films and photos on a clearly curved screen (curved display) – so viewers and gamers are right in the middle just there. First improvement: The brightness deviation is nice and low at a maximum of 4.5 percent – no matter what viewing angle gamers look at it from. With the predecessor it was seven percent. A noticeable difference.

Two in one

Samsung is not experimenting with the resolution, the G9 still shows content in twice the WQHD resolution. That means: 5120×1440 pixels in super wide 32:9 format. Sounds impressive, but can you gamble properly on such a giant? The answer: It depends. The gaming experience is impressive in single-player titles such as “Microsoft Flight Simulator”, but in multiplayer titles such as “League of Legends” the eye can no longer follow, the “playing field” is far too large. But there is a solution to the problem: the Samsung can be set so that it displays a normal 27-inch image in the middle of the screen (picture-by-picture technology), and then it remains black on the left and right. This is ideal for gamers who don’t always want to use the full width. Great for the home office: if you want, you can split the screen into two 27-inch screens, for example to surf on the left and work on the right – without an annoying monitor frame in the middle.

Can’t get any brighter

However, the predecessor was already able to do this, so what is really new? The Neo is equipped with the Mini-QLEDs known from Samsung televisions – before they were “normal” QLEDs. They ensured very high brightness values (646 candelas per square meter), but the Neo eclipsed this value with 1035 cd/m². In combination with the HDR technology (“High Dynamic Range”), colors look simply dazzling in a positive sense. The display convinced with a high color fidelity of almost 98.1 percent. Great: The Samsung shows 100 percent of the sRGB color space, which means: Graphic designers can also access it here.

In gaming heaven

Important again for gamers: Image changes work extremely quickly with an average of 2.8 milliseconds, but slightly slower than the predecessor (2.6 ms). Despite this, ugly streaks never appear in fast film and game scenes. To prevent ghost images and distortions from appearing on the display, the Samsung uses G-Sync technology to synchronize playback with the calculated images from Nvidia graphics cards. The monitor also works with FreeSync, which synchronizes playback with AMD graphics cards. In addition, the Samsung can display content incredibly quickly – thanks to a refresh rate of 240 Hertz. The Neo G9 refreshes the image up to 240 times per second. That’s great, but requires a top-of-the-line graphics card. If you want to play current games in the high resolution of twice WQHD and at 240 Hertz, you need a graphics card with high-performance chips such as AMD’s RX 6900 XT or Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti.

  • Ideal for gamers
  • Very high brightness
  • A strong GPU is mandatory

Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 in the test: the conclusion

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 is the alpha animal among gaming monitors: With extremely high brightness, great, natural colors, an insanely fast image build-up and fast image changes, it leaves nothing to be desired. It is logical that Samsung charged a sporty 1,849 euros for this at the time of the test. Thanks to Black Friday 2022, the monitor is available at the counter at a much lower price, namely for 1,399 euros. If you want it, you should strike now. However: If you want to fully exploit the luxurious equipment, you need an expensive graphics card.
