Winter storm causing blizzard conditions in central U.S. expected to reach New York. Here’s forecast. | will it snow in florida

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A winter weather system causing blizzard conditions throughout the central United States is expected to work its way up the mid-Atlantic and affect New York later this week.

The area of low pressure is bringing heavy snow, strong winds and ice to the Northern Plains and upper Midwest as severe weather watches extend as far south as Texas and the Florida Panhandle.

The widespread storm will then set its sights on New York beginning on Thursday, said Frank Pereira, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, and could complicate commutes toward the end of the week.

“As it moves northward, it is going to potentially produce snow and ice for portions of the Central Appalachians, the mid-Atlantic,” said Pereira. “Right now it’s not looking like a big deal for the northern cities, but there could be a wintry mix.”

Staten Island, parts of Manhattan and a sliver of Brooklyn have a slight chance of seeing a light dusting, but heavier accumulation is currently expected to fall well north of the five boroughs, according to the National Weather Service’s predictive forecast maps.

Still, the storm will move into the New York City metro area late Thursday with slushy conditions possible in the overnight hours.

“That would be that small little window where you could see some frozen precipitation,” said Pereira.

The heaviest precipitation is then forecasted to begin Friday morning and linger throughout the day, potentially impacting driving conditions. The borough’s forecast indicates between one and two inches of rainfall is possible during that span.

“It’ll certainly be messy because we could see some significant precipitation falling,” said Pereira.

The storm will then taper off for New York City late Friday into early Saturday, said Pereira.
